Mission and Heritage of the Department of Surgery
The Department of Surgery at St. Elizabeth Health Center, as partners in the mission of Humility of Mary Health Partners (HMHP), is dedicated to continue the healing ministry of Jesus in an atmosphere of compassion and respect. The mission of the Department of Surgery is to provide excellence in all aspects of surgical services. We function as a dominant member of the integral health care network of the Mahoning Valley and surrounding communities to provide competent and compassionate surgical care and quality service to our area residents. We continue to stay abreast of the latest technology in surgical diagnostics and treatment through our commitment and dedication to research and education.
Our heritage is a testament to the Sisters of the Holy Humility of Mary at Villa Maria, Pennsylvania, who in 1911 staffed the first Catholic hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. Their staff grew from 4 Sisters and 2 nurses to become a region of Mercy Health (formerly Catholic Health Partners), the largest health system in Ohio, providing a full spectrum of quality health services to the Mahoning Valley area. As their mission to care for the needs of the sick and suffering in the community has endured to this day, we also are entrusted with the administration and challenges of surgical care to that same population.
