St. Elizabeth Department of Surgery Welcome
. We are proud of our heritage and history in Youngstown, Ohio. For the past 100 years, the members of our faculty have served the community with a broad-based clinical expertise. We have more than 75 active staff surgeons in nine specialty sections and other associated services who are Board Certified or Board Eligible in the surgical specialties. One of our primary purposes is to educate surgical residents to become responsible, ethical, and compassionate skilled surgeons during their 5-year residency program. Our department fosters an environment that emphasizes knowledge and skills common to all surgical specialties in the framework of the six core competences of surgical education. Full staff support and funding is provided for resident research and new innovations in surgical care. Our surgeons have an academic and professional affiliation with the Northeast Ohio Medical University, and they are eager and committed to providing the medical students with a strong background of instructional teaching. The future of our health care is dependent on today's students and residents to become tomorrow's leaders in the mission of academic and professional surgical excellence.
Surgical therapy is changing at a rapid rate. Procedures once open are now endoscopic. Inpatient surgery is now outpatient. Complications and length of hospital stay have decreased dramatically in the past 5 years. Patient safety, lower infection rates, less blood usage, and improved surgical outcomes are integral components of the surgical experience.
At St. Elizabeth Health Center, physicians, non-physician providers, staff, and administration have invested education and resources into a contemporary surgical environment. New diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities are expanding constantly in this community, i.e., robotic, reconstructive, and endovascular surgery, just to name a few. Fewer patients need to leave the area to receive surgical care even for complicated conditions. Patients are facing choices of diagnoses and treatment in a variety of settings.
